Initially, our ambitions were modest, mainly intending to engage our local volunteers. However, the power of our movement quickly spread to other states. Our volunteers resonated with our impactful campaigns, specifically designed to be accessible for them to participate in.
By the end of that historic year, we had executed 28 targeted campaigns, successfully galvanizing voters in key battleground states for the November elections, as well as the consequential Georgia Senate runoff on January 5, 2021. In total, we crafted, printed, and distributed over 2.5 million postcards!
We were beyond excited by our role in securing the blue trifecta in 2021. Nevertheless, the fight for democracy persists, as threats continue to loom ominously. We pressed on, launching campaigns to champion the Freedom to Vote Act in pivotal states and waging battles for democracy in California (yes!) and climate justice in Colorado (Blue Wave’s home state!)
During the 2022 midterm elections, recognizing the importance of state legislatures in shaping electoral outcomes and governing, we strategically focused our efforts on state legislative races with exciting outcomes. We propelled Michigan into a trifecta victory for the first time in 40 years, safeguarded the trifecta in Colorado, brought about a flip in the Pennsylvania House, and staved off a veto-proof conservative supermajority in Wisconsin. These triumphs bear significance as they influence state policies, as well as fortify the very foundations of democracy.
This year, we took up the cause of the Wisconsin Supreme Court race and succeeded in tilting the balance toward a pro-democracy majority. On August 1st, Judge Janet Protasiewicz, a champion of democracy, will take her oath and safeguard free and fair elections in one of the most egregiously gerrymandered states in the nation.
Presently, our focus is fixed on another crucial state: Ohio. We are mobilizing voters for the August Special Election and working to thwart the perils of an anti-democratic constitutional amendment, Issue 1. Our aim is to ensure that the voices of Ohioans are not silenced in this traditionally low-turnout election.
All in all, since the conclusion of the historic 2020 election season, we have undertaken an additional 20 campaigns and disseminated another 2.5 million postcards. As we gear up for 2024, yet another pivotal election that holds the potential to shape the destiny of democracy and the rule of law in our nation, we want to use this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you reading this:
