I started my political activism while in college, supporting George McGovern’s campaign. I grew up in a household with a father who was in the carpenter’s union, and my mother, a schoolteacher who was a member of her teacher’s union. Also, my uncle, who owned an advertising agency, was involved in developing a jingle for J. Howard Edmondson’s gubernatorial election in 1959, when I was 10-years-old, and I was politically aware then, especially since the jingle helped him to win the election!
I also worked on an unsuccessful campaign for a candidate running for U.S. House of Representatives. I then turned my attention to working for the Obama campaign as well as for Hilary Clinton. I have been a local and state delegate to our Democratic Party conventions.
This election is the most critical one in my lifetime, and perhaps that of our nation. I want my children and grandchildren to live in a democracy, not an autocracy or theocracy. I pray that my financial help, albeit small, and my writing cards to encourage folks to vote will make a difference.
When considering how I could be most useful helping to turn out the vote. Being a 75-year-old retiree, and Air Force Reserve veteran, I selected Blue Wave. Being on limited retirement income, it has provided me the opportunity on a personal level to reach out to folks who either infrequently vote, or aren’t inclined to follow politics. My hope is that if even a few are persuaded to vote blue, they, along with those persuaded by others participating in the postcard campaign, that we can help assure Democratic victory for democracy!
